NSW Life Jacket Rules & Regulations

The governing rules for the use of PFDs and life jackets on watercraft in NSW navigable waters were tightened from 1st November 2010 to help prevent further loss of life on the water.

A 1-year educational period began, and from 1st November 2011 compliance efforts increased along with penalties for non-compliance.

The changes introduced mandatory wearing of life jackets in a number of high-risk situations, particularly for those in small vessels and children under 12. These changes came after extensive community consultation, with over 86% support for the recommended changes.

Statistical analysis of boating incidents over a 10-year period found compelling evidence of the value of PFDs, including a significant decrease in bar crossing deaths since compulsory life jacket wearing requirements were introduced for all vessels crossing bars.
