Life jackets come in all shapes and sizes.

It's important when choosing a life jacket that it matches both your body weight and your body size.
Most manufacturers will group weights into teirs (example 10-15kg, 15-25kg) this is helpful in narrowing down what life jacket will suit your needs.
However, you'll also want to make sure the life vest fits your waist or chest size too. Thankfully most life jacets can be adjusted around the waist to ensure a snug fit.

Children's life jackets should have a groin or crotch strap to prevent it from coming off when floating in the water. Because adult jackets don't have a groin strap, you'll also want to make sure it's not too loose.

When choosing a life jacket for your kids, there is a difference between standard children life jackets and infant life jackets.
Infant life jackets must be designed differently to account for a toddlers proportionally larger head. Therefore it will have a much larger collar.
Standard children's life jackets don't need an extra large collar. Generally speaking, infant/toddler jackets will be for ages under 3 years old.
If your child is under this age, don't only look at the weight, make sure the jacket is designed specifically for infants/toddlers. Some kids in this age bracket may fit the weight category of an older child, but their body proportions will still be different, and therefore require the larger collar to support the head.
